If Id released the source code to Quake 1/2/3, why aren't those games included with any distros?

Is there a legal reason, or is it that the games are simply too out-dated to consider?

the source code for the q1/q2/q3 binary is free, the game data (maps, textures, sounds,etc..) are not

If there is a freely distributed demo / shareware version than it's possible to download or maybe even include in a distro (I'm not sure about how the licensing might affect this.)

I know that you can get several different source ports of Doom, as well as the shareware level files, as .deb files if you use Debian... and I know it also offers at least the binaries for quake 1 and 2, but I never checked to see if it had any data files available.

You can get the Quake 1 and 2 demo/shareware/whatever data files from Id's FTP site, somewhere. I've got them both somewhere (and I wish there was somewhere I could get/buy the full version of Q2, that demo is good. Oh well).
