I'm running Gentoo, WineX2.1 (from emerge, probably the CVS version), and the Nvidia drivers on my TNT2. I've installed HL with no problem, but when I try to run it, I get the error I need to change my colors to 16bit... everything is configured in XF86Config ok, so I try winex --winver win98 hl.exe and the screen loads a part of the console button in hl then crashes. It doesn't give any msgs, just says starting debugger. I'm stumped... any way to fix this?

Try running the debugger for errors
winex -debugmsg +err hl.exe
see what that gives you. If still nothing, tourture yourself for a while and run the debugger with +all. This runs forever so be patient with it, but it will display every single message so you'll know exactly where it crashes...

also try running it like this, change it to your working path though ;)

winex -workdir "/home/mahdi/.transgaming/c_drive/sierra/Half-Life" "C:/sierra/Half-Life/hl.exe" -console

+err doesnt give any msgs, but all did... -workdir wasn't a command either btw... ok here is the readout of winex -debugmsg +all hl.exe ... as you can see the only problem is it doesn't start the debugger...

sh-2.05a$ winex -debugmsg +all --winver win98 hl.exe
err:win32:_EnterSysLevel (0x40ba0fb8, level 2): Holding 0x40c389a4, level 3. Expect deadlock!
wine: Unhandled exception, starting debugger...

I too had this problem when I tried to setup HL a few months ago. Go into your XF86 config file. Look for the default screen depth and change it to 16 bit. This should take care of the problem.

(I use winex cvs)

wine --winver win98 .....

Otherwise I get that 16 bit gripe back. I've heard this is the case for others.

I did the --winver win98 and it just shows the corner of the word console and then crashes..

Try winex, it is frequently updated. I bet eventually you'll get a working one. Then save it.
