Hello,

My sister needs to do a sort of computer literacy course, and I've got the computer set up on Mandrake 8.2 linux. She can handle most of the stuff (word processing, spreadsheet, etc) easily in open office, but I'm not sure how to help her to set up a database.

I can't find a package for adabas on the install disks. Am I missing something, or is it part of the open office mdk package? How DO you set up a database in Open Office? Or, alternatively, what's the best way to get her a database program that she can work with? I'd kinda prefer to avoid phpMyAdmin. ;)

OpenOffice would be best, if possible, since they have good tutorials and stuff that she's going to need. I doubt that a HowTo or man page would be much use to her.

Thanks,

Dusty

Adabas is part of Star Office package . You have to buy Star Office to get it.

hmmmm... ok....

What other options do I have to set up some sort of MS-Access type system?

Thanks,

Dusty

MySQL is a free database program which can be installed on linux. You can find it at http://www.mysql.com

Does MySQL contain MS-Access like graphical tools for entering data? I thought you could only interact with it directly using SQL statements.

On the other hand, is there a good graphical frontend for the MySQL server (of course there must be, but I'm asking where ;)). Will OOo connect to MySQL and create tables? How?

Thanks yet again,

Dusty

Staroffice 5.2 contains adabas, you don't need to buy the 6.0. I still don't know how to work it yet though :( . msql works fine through command line dunno about good gui ...
