I am noticing that some packages seem to install fine from the cl under KDE and do not install to well from GNOME particularly 1) Lucent winmodem drivers install fine from KDE and not from GNOME (missing driver files) and 2) the Java 2 SDK. It seems to install but then is nowhere to be found by either myself or Open Office during install. The places where I have downloaded these from do not indicate that either environment will be better or worse than the other for the purposes of install and I assuemd that the cl was the cl and that the environment im coming from should not affect rpm installs. If anyone can tell me if it does make a difference or what I may be doing wrong I would appreciate it. Thanks

Certainly, the choice of windows manager shouldn't have anything to do with it, except... for the full minute KDE takes to start up. It does a bunch of 'settings initialization', I have no idea what exactly KDE is doing on those phases, it even claims to initialize peripherals, all of these was already done on bootup, wasn't it? Fluxbox doesn't wastes any seconds doing any of these, it sends me right to the desktop. My only guess is that this 'setting up' is what justfies the difference of running stuff under Gnome or KDE. I haven't used Gnome before, so I dunno if Gnome also does 'stuff' while loading.. anyway, I believe installation should fail under both windows manager, but it doesn't fails in KDE because of all that 'startup' show. Either that or I really don't know what I am talking about (I vote for the later).
