I reinstalled Mkd 8.2, installed the kernel update to 2.4.18.8.1mdk-1-3mdk.i586.

All applications ran, so I tried an internet connection. pppd started, the modem connection icon docked on the panel. Good I thought, the kernel update did the trick.

I started Konquorer, typed in a URL, and pressed enter. Instant freeze. No keyboard response at all. ctrl + alt + backspace, ctrl + alt + del, alt + F1, 2 3 4 also did nothing. Pressing numlock gave no response.

I've searched for references to this problem for a few months but found nothing.

My hardware is Celeron 1.2Gz, 192MB RAM, Gigabyte G-6VTXE(-A) motherboard. VIA VT82C694 chipset. Actiontec PCI modem. SIS 305 video card with 32MB.

The above hardware works well under RedHat 7.3, Mandrake 8.0 and Mandrake 8.1, which makes me think it has to be something in Mandrake 8.2 causing the crashes.

The simple solution would be to go back to 8.1

Surely someone out there has struck this before?

Please be aware of the universal caveat for using CVS

IT IS DEVELOPMENT .. and constantly changing. There is a *very* good likelyhood that the code accessible in CVS may be broken at any time.

Please speak to the developers of the software involved, or wait several hours and try a cvs update, and retry compiling.

{{{{{ exceptionally strange ... I posted this to a different thread --- whapppend? }}}}

Please ignore this message in this context, I will attempt to post where I tried to put it before....

I've tried yet another kernel update, and this time actually got on the net for about 0 minutes. Then instead of freezing as usual, the screen went black and rebooted.

I've given up on Mandrake 8.2 and will now stick to 8.1
