I was able to install Redhat 7.3 and installed Grub to the MBR, and my Windows 2000 installation still works. Now however, when I get to grub and select Linux for booting I get to the loading screen o.k., where you get all those msgs about whether stuff is o.k. or failed, then after that where it normally should load the graphical login (I *did* select graphical during installation), my screen blinks repeatedly for a while then eventually what appears to be a text login screen appears:
Redhat Linux release 7.3 (Valhalla) kernel 2.4.18-3 on an i686
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.
Hitting the enter key brings up the login prompt; I login with my pw, then all I get is
[login_name@machine_name login_name]$
and a blinking cursor (obviously I've substituted my actual login and machine name above). Now what? I thought the graphical login then the gui desktop should appear, or do I have to enter a command for that? So close...!
I should add that I'm using a modified kernel from Highpoint to enable my highpoint 372 controller...everything installed the way it should have using expert text mode (required by the custom installation floppy), and I precisely followed the instructions for installing the modified kernel before the post-installation reboot.
Any suggestions anyone?
