Quake 3 Arena & voodoo3 fullscreen

I am having trouble getting Quake 3 Arena to run in full screen on my linux box. It runs perfectly in a window. When i try to start it up in fullscreen it changes the resolution which crashes X. Even when the resolution is set to the same as X, it still changes the resolution as it starts.

Tuxracer runs perfectly in full screen as it doesn't change the resolution as it starts up.

I'm using a voodoo3 3500, for my video card.
