Gaccm 08-12-2002, 02:07 AM fancy what was the pt of your post? if the guy doubled he was nice enough to delete it. Anyways, it is very easy to get an nvidia card working. It should automaticly have black/white text working and now you need graphical and 3d. go to www.nvidia.com and download the latest linux drivers (I always get the source version and compile myself cause i tweak out the config, but for you i would really recommand using an rpm build if you are using redhat or mandrake). Now all it does is put the driver in /lib/<kernel version> and should start working immidiatly. Now you need to change your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and tell it to use the new driver. Under Section "Device" (where it lists your vid card) make sure you have this: Driver "nvidia". And you should be done. The nvidia driver comes with a README that has other stuff, I might have skipped a step cause it has been a while so you should read that also. uggae 08-13-2002, 08:12 AM i am not sure if my nVidia GeForce2 MX400 64MB is fully enabled, cause there is no prob with installing (RH7.0 autodetects it), i get a fine resolution/color depth, but when i start a game using 3D (e.g. TuxRacer) it runs horribly slow - no 3D hardware support enabled ?. is it supposed to do so on my Athlon 1.33GHz (266MHz FSB)256MB DDR ? I don't think so ... (maybe i'm wrong) I'm going to download and install those www.nvidia.com drivers and see if it gets better. i'm writing this just because i'm confused about that "mysterious-3D-hardware-unsupport-while-at-the-same-time-2D-is-fine" :) if anyone can/want make this clearer to me, please do so. thanx Icarus 08-13-2002, 09:30 AM RH does detect the card, but it doesn't use the nVidia's OpenGL drivers...if you check your /etc/X11/XFConfig-4 file you will see that it is using the "nv" video driver...this is the generic driver that has NO 3D support... Follow Gaccm's post and install the drivers from www.nvidia.com Trust us...you will not be dissapointed :) Sastraxi 08-13-2002, 07:17 PM If you're still unsure of whether it installed correctly, type 'glxinfo' at any prompt. Look at the top of the output, and if it says Direct Rendering: Yes, you're in business. uggae 08-14-2002, 12:52 PM Now i've got it ... Those "default" drivers used by RH7.3 just after installation were somehow "generic" and definitely NOT accelerated. I've downloaded the nVidia drivers and everything is working just fine. But thanx anyway. IMHO - the user should be noticed that he is using NONaccelerated drivers. Everything except the hardware support was fine, i'd be desperate without knowing about those nVidia drivers DOlson 08-23-2002, 03:36 PM Originally posted by uggae Now i've got it ... It tells you if it is 3D-accellerated or not. So any Mandrake users should know by that information that they don't have 3D accelleration enabled after install. I have a tutorial for this on my website, and I tested it with Red Hat 7.3 once, so I know it works on both that and Mandrake. I only wish that Mandrake would include 3D accelerated drivers for Nvidia cards. Up till now it seems that they only include the auto 3D drivers for Voodoo cards (glide). justlinux.com
