I got an old 486 DX-2 with 16 Megs and 1.5 Gigs of HDD space. It is hooked up to a Switch with a 10M/Bit Network Card but I got no CD-Rom to install from.
I want to install Vector LINUX. My question is if I can somehow partiton the HDD and copy the esential files from the Net so I can install the new OS?

Plz Help me

Too bad Vector linux doesn't have a network boot option.

Follow the install.txt page on the Vector linux sitemap for configuring the computer. Except you will need to download zip file on another compter, unzip the files and then rezip them to spanned floppies. Then unzip the floppies on the 486. You will need to have a dos boot floppy with the tools specified in the install.txt and of course pkunzip or similar to unzip the floppies to the 486.

I asked myself if it would be possible to use one of those 1 floppy distibutions to partition the HDDs and move the essential files to the 486 and then install Vector Linux?
Anyone who knows a dist. that has the tools for that?

Have a look through http://old.lwn.net/Distributions/ as they have just about every distro available listed.

Alternatively, take your CD drive and temporarily put it on the 486 for the install. It'll save you grief!
