I am attempting to install Red Hat Linux 7.3 on my COMPAQ computer system, but the installer hangs consistently. With the text mode option, anaconda locks up about a third of the way through the message "Copying install image to hard drive" (or words to that effect). With the graphical installer, it hangs right after formatting my ext3 partition (I only use one, a 2.5GB partition, followed by 244MB of swap space).
My system specs are as follows:
COMPAQ Presario 7360
56 MB RAM
hda: about 8 GB, divided into two partitions, both for Win98
hdb: partitioned for Linux as above
hdc: CD-ROM drive
hdd: CD-R/RW drive
Video card: Trident Blade3D/MVP4 (detected as Trident CyberBlade)
I have had no problems with Red Hat Linux 6.x in the past, on the same computer. At first I tried the "upgrade" option, to upgrade to 7.3, but it told me I didn't have enough disk space. After that, I backed up my files and tried to do a clean install - that's when I started having this problem.
