what's the difference in dling and compiling the latest cvs of wine vs winex?

if you mean what is the difference in the 2 products then winex is optimized/coded for gaming support and wine is not.

Does winex require wine? and does either require a windows CD?

winex is basicly wine with lots of directx support added on. both allow you to run windows app on linux, with different amounts of success. I have generally found that wine is better for installing programs and winex is better for playing them (I have only tried games).

Where can I download a copy of WineX? Is it free or do i have to pay for it?

WineX is free via their CVS, you can download, compile and install it for free...

If you want a binary package (RPM, DEB...)which includes copy protection support, so you don't have to use cracks to play the game, you need to subscribe for $5/month for a minimum of 3 months (up front)
