Howdy!

I think we need an NHF for gaming in Linux. Maybe two NHFs, even. One on using straight-up Linux for gaming and another using WineX for gaming in Linux. I'm very happy with the performance of Linux, and the control I have over how it runs and looks, but until I can transfer my game-play to it, I have to keep Win2k in my PC. It seems like all the information on how to make gaming work in Linux is scattered to the four winds. Too many sources of information to read and browse through to get it to work. A nice, concise, one-spot-only source is needed. I feel that LinuxNewbie.org should be the spot for that source of information. Why? Because it would be put in plain English and anyone and everybody can benefit from it. I don't wanna have to go out and purchase Mandrake Gaming Edition. It would be nice, but it defeats the purpose of why I got into Linux in the first place.

Whew! I got that out of my chest! :D

I'm with you...the more gaming info out there on linux, the better.

I also (so far) keep windows 98 for games on my desktop...but I subscribed to Transgaming's WineX and next week I'm on vacation so I intend to try to get the following games to work on it:

Baldur's Gate
Diablo 2
MechWarrior 3
StarCraft
NeverWinter Nights (if I manage to buy it)

and a few more as I dig through my pile of CDs...I realize a lot of them are older games, but what the heck, I LIKE them and I never got to finish em (job and gf ya know...).

I also am going to try to get Unreal Tournament going too (and I believe that there's a LOT of info on this site about that, so I'm confident and happy).

I'll be trying all this on Mandrake 8.1 or 8.2...not sure if I'm gonna upgrade yet...

If it all goes well, maybe I can try my hand at my first NHF...or at the VERY least an "how I did it" post.

the problem with a nhf is that it is all very game dependant (do you install game X with wine setup.exe or wine install.exe?). As for help trouble shooting, those are VERY game dependant and the most you can help someone is to point them to the codeweavers app database.

Tcap, starcraft is a very easy install, BG i would except to also work flawlessly, but I have not tried the rest so good luck.

If your looking for tips on gettng games to run using WineX, try looking through Transgamings game listing...there are lots of helpful pointers for games there.

I also feel that there should one good solid program that is free and dependable to work with the newest games. I hope somebody does something about it soon though.

Considering wine is still considered "pre-alpha" it has a very long way to go and hopefully will be able to run perfectly in the next few years
