I have a strange networking issue. I have several W2000 (only because I have to!) and a RH 6.2 system running on my network through as 10/100 switch. All networking, Samba, Apache etc is working well on RH 6.2, but it is a small, slow machine. I installed RH 7.3 on a larger machine and want to migrate the 6.2 stuff to 7.3.

After installation, the FA311 Netgear card is recognized at startup as well as with "ifdown" and "ifup" (no errors), ifconfig -a reports normal state, as in 6.2. netstat -r shows the applicable routes, /etc/resolv.conf has the dns server entries. In other words, a plain default server install!

Now, I can ping localhost, I can ping the assigned IP of the NIC, but I can not ping anything else from the 7.3 system, neither can anything else see the 7.3 box. Everything else works just great.

What am I missing?
Thanks for your input.

PS: I have W2000 installed on a seperate drive to test the hardware and all networking works with the same hardware and network configuration. Same NIC, cable etc to the same port on the switch.

When I ping, I get either "Destination host unreachable" or "Destination network unreachable" depending on what I ping.

RH install turns on the firewall by default. I don't remember if it was outgoing as well as incoming traffic.

You need to change the firewall rules. I don't rememeber the exact command structure and don't have time to look it up. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
