I tried Mandrake and Red Hat, and neither are able to run X with my ATI All In Wonder Radeon Installed, eventually I stuck in an older video card (Riva TNT 16 meg) and it worked fine. I currently have Red Hat installed and Im not worried about OpenGL support but I dont want to have to swap video cards every time I want to use Windows. Is there a way to configure XFree in order to get my card to work with just 2d support, or is there a driver that might work better (I found one at www.xig.com called Summit but it costs money ($99) and I cant find a serial # for it) I know there are ways to configure x but I dont know how to do it in console, can anyone offer me a step by step on how to get it to work with the card...

Which Radeon is it? 7500? 8500? Pre-7500?
The [78]500 cards are only supported in X 4.2 (or later, although 4.2 is the current version). Run X -version from a console to check which version you're running, and post that too.
If you are running 4.2, then vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (there are editors other than vi, but I don't know if you have them installed), and scroll down until you find a line like Driver "xxxxx" (xxxxx should be something other than ati). Hit the 'i' key to enter insert mode, change the xxxxx to ati, and hit Esc to exit from insert mode. Then type :wq to save and exit. See if startx works (you have to have your Radeon plugged in when you try to start X though).

Just tell it to use the ati drivers, they work fine, even if they don't autodetect correctly. I'm successfully using the all-in-wonder 7500. To get the tv tuner to work, download and install the gatos package. If you have a mandrake 8.2 disc 2, the gatos rpm is on that. Also, there are improved ati drivers at the gatos website.

Tim: Never tried those drivers while I still had my Radeon... hmm... are they just newer? Can they make a card that was running TuxRacer at 30fps (my 7500DDR -- funny thing was, the 7500DDR that was in my family's computer ran TuxRacer at like 60fps  ) run it significantly faster? Or haven't you tried that?
werkkrew: If you're using Mandrake, make sure it's version 8.2. 8.1 is too old for the Radeon 7200 (unless you feel like replacing X, which is possible, but I wouldn't recommend it with RPM's). I don't know if RedHat installs X 4.2 or 4.1, but I would hope the newest version would install 4.2.

Haven't tried them yet...still setting up my new system (libranet 2.0 apt-getted to debian sid), but haven't upgraded X on that one to 4.2 (I did upgrade on my old install), so I'm using vesa driver right now just so i have X, but it's pathetically slow.

Just need to get my Belkin USB 2.0 Hub working and I will be rockin.

I tried several drivers for the ati with linux RH8.0 and they will work with the video or graphic card ... but for the TV and Camera it doesn't seem to work... ATI All-In-Wonder 128 ... it always defaults to rage 128 ...

Hi Cowgirl
I am that configuring graphics for XWindows server can be a pain in the butt. For Every time I tried to test the configuratioon just the installation program my system just hangs. I just haved to be carefull about resolution I use. I usually guess at the safess. If I get it I could kiss bye to my card all together.

I'm using RH8.0 with the 7500 & I just checked my XF86Config, & the driver is listed as "radeon" . I switched it to "ati" & it still runs Tux Racer like crap.

"radeon" should be OK...
Which 7500 chip is it? I had one a while back (some special form of the 7500LE) that ran Quake 2 at 30fps or so, so I could see if you got that one, why tuxracer would be slow even with the "radeon" driver. Did you get it from fticomputer.com by any chance?

I think I got it from Best Buy. I'll look to see what chip it has on it.

GET A GEFORCE! I have the 7000 and if I try to use a distro other than Mandrake or Caldera, it just gives me hell for 3D, I've been working on getting 3D in Slack for months now :p I had almost 400FPS on glxgears in Vector Linux, but now I've upgraded to Slackware 9.0, and I'm back to 100 I Know I can get more, I've downloaded the GATOS drivers, and I'm going to attempt to install them tonight, and HOPE that I can FINALLY get some 3D in Linux, I need to play some Tuxracer, or Chromium!
