If I have bad quality sound recording is it more likely a low quality microphone or sound device? I have onboard sound and a crappy microphone that came on a headset for like $10. Should I get a new sound card or microphone?

If all the other sounds on your system works fine with good quality, change your mic.
BTW, if your mic is old, the problem might be because your mic is dirty or dusty on the inside, with dirt and dust fallen into the input holes, so that may the a problem.

How are you recording it? I'd say you should use better quality stuff to get a good recording, but it could also be that you are recording it at a low sampling rate.

I get much lower noise in my SB live than the mobo's sound stuff.
