i am very new to Linux so bare with me.
I have installed mandrake 8.2 on my PC but I can't get the Gnome CD Player to play a CD. It opens the program and starts to play track 1 but after about 1 second just stops.
Also if I try to open the contents of a CD I just get a message in Nautilis saying "could not display contents of CD rom"
One more thing whats a good program to use for CD Burning
Any Ideas
Thanks guys

Is your regular CD-ROM mounted? It should be, I think Mandrake has automount on my by default but that'd be a good thing to check.
I use XCDroast. You can get it here (http://www.xcdroast.org/) .
It is just a front end to cdtools, a command line cd burning suite so you'll have to download both but it is has been good and reliable for me.

FWIW, is the hard disk light also on full? Immediately after a fresh install of Mandrake, slocate will eat up CPU cycles for a few minutes. Or try XMMS, the winamp clone, it can play CDs as well. I once tried the Gnome player, it runs on top of noatun, noatun would lock up on me as well; solved that by using XMMS instead of gnome things.

Sorry to say it may just be Mandrake 8.2. I have a cd-burner installed, the OS mounts and recognizes it, but as soon as the dive is accessed the entire system locks completely, refusing all input from keyboard or mouse, requiring a hard reset to even shutdown. Mandrake has not even responded to any questions about this behavior. I am ready to try another disto to see if that helps.
