Hardware Checking?

My Network Card seems to be there, but i am not sure if it is working, is there a command to check that it is working.

Also something funny has happened to my sound, i can play MP3's, wav files, so on, as long as they are on my hard disk. If i try to play music from my cd drive, it doesn't work, it will tell my how many songs there are and how long they are for but i get no sound ? I just click the icon on KDE 2. I am usin Mandrake 8.2

got the sound cable that goes from your cdrom to hard drive hooked up?
regarding ethernet-(from root) /sbin/ifconfig -a
IF you get a big output with the words up and running, than it's, well, up and running :D
