Greetings & all that jazz

On occasion when shutting down my RH7.2 box I get the following error messages:

md:stopping all md devices
Power down
general protection fault: f000
CPU: 0
EIP: 0050 [<00008885>]
EFLAGS: 00010046
eax: 00005301 ebx: 00000001 ecx: 00000000 edx: 00000000
esi: 00008146 edi: 00000292 ebp: 67890000 esp: cb043ddc
ds: 0058 es: 0000 ss: 0018
Process halt (pid: 9549, stackpage = cb043000)
Stack ... (whole long list of numbers here - not sure if they're relevant so not included)
Call Trace ... (ditto)

Code: Bad EIP value.
/etc/rc0.d/S01halt: line1: 9549 Segmentation fault halt -i -d -p

To get past this block it seems that pressing <ctrl+alt+del> is the only thing that works.

So, my query: what is this? What causes it and how can I stop it from happening again? I have not noticed any particular pattern or association between this error message and anything that I do when the computer is up and running.

Any ideas?

Were you ever able to get rid of your shutdown errors. I'm having the same or very similar problem, and I have not had any luck finding a resolution.

If you have made any progress with this I would like to appreciate any info that you have. :)

Try these forum search results for 'Bad EIP value' (http://linuxnewbie.org/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=170875&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending).

Hopefully one of those will help.

One mentions something about overclocking or underclocking.
