Hello all,

I wonder is someone can share some ideas with me on something I want to try at home.

At this moment I have a two-computer LAN: one laptop running mandrake linux and a desktop running windows 98. The linux machine connects to the internet and then shares the connection with the win box. So I have an internal LAN card on my laptop connected to the ADSL modem and a PCMCIA LAN card connected to the LAN card on the desktop PC. This is pretty standard.

What I want now is to add another computer to this setup. This computer would also run linux and would act as a mp3 jukebox on the network. I have seen some scripts that allow the user to play and manage mp3 files from the jukebox computer, the later acting as a server making mp3 files available according to requests usually made through a web browser. The thing is that I would like not only to be able to to that but also to remotely request the jukebox computer to play something by itself (e.g. press play in my laptop computer and get the file sound on the remote computer, something like this). Also I would like to download mp3 files from the internet and store them on the jukebox to play later.

I'm not too sure how to build such a setup (both from a hw and sw point of view - what sw? then what router? a switch? how?) and I would really like to hear your comments on this. If you had to do this, how would you start? What would be your concerns?

Well, sorry for this rather long post and thanks for all the help in advance.

Rui

just forward port requests for whatever port you are going to run the jukebox on from your current linux gateway to the new box

i run andromeda (http://freshmeat.net/projects/andromeda/?topic_id=251%2C92%2C93%2C243%2C122) on my gateway box , you can check it out here (http://fobot.pointclark.net/andromeda/andromeda.php) , it was really easy to setup, as long as you already have php on your box, or you include it in your initial setup, andromeda only takes 5-10 minutes to setup

good luck! :)

nice, thanks for your reply.

What about hardware setup? I wrote before that by now I have only 2 computers connected to each other. So my linux box has one card connected to the ADSL modem and another network card for connection to the second computer. Now If I bring an extra computer to the picture I need to buy a router, right? or a switch (hope so because it's cheaper)? What should I do?

ooops, I guess what I need is a hub... In terms of building this network I can use a hub, right?

The linux box connected with one of the network cards to the ADSL modem, the other card connected to the hub. The win98 box is connected to the hub and the jukebox PC is also connected to the hub.

Would this work?

Since all you have is a couple of computers a hub will work.

And for what number of computers on the network does the use of a hub start to become unpractical?

<i>And for what number of computers on the network does the use of a hub start to become unpractical?</i>

When the number of computers exceeds the number of ports on your hub it becomes impractical. :D
