Ok........I wanted to go ahead and max out the RAM on my PC, so I bought another 256MB stick.

I have an HP Pavillion 7940 (it came with 128MB PC133 from the factory and will support 512MB). I had already added one stick of Kingston KVR-PC133/256 memory to it and the machine ran fine. I guess this is a good time to let you know I am dual booting Mandrake 8.1 and Win2K. Both sticks were PC133 and I even verified that the machine was supposed to be able to run PC133 at Critical.com.

Well, when I added the second 256 stick (identical to the first 256 stick), Linux will boot and run fine (and recognizes the memory), the BIOS recognizes both 256MB sticks, but Win2K will not boot and gives me a blue screen of death and says something about the BIOS not being ACPI (?) compliant or something. It basically says to update the BIOS.

If the BIOS recognizes it and Linux runs fine with it, where is my problem (besides the obvious Windows problem!...LOL!) I called Kingston and they were no help at all. They even tried to tell me that my machine was only supposed to run PC100 (but I had 2 PC133 sticks working before).

Any ideas?

*grins*

Interesting .. .we're having *exactly* the same problem with a flock of compaq boxes at work ...

Redhat 6.2 on one box has 1.5 Gig of ram in it (three 512M sticks) with no problems no issues...
If we try to put 1 (one) 512M stick in the *same* box running NT .. nt refuses to boot. Hell ... the bootloader craps out before displaying the NT load sequences.

Ok...I figured it out. I had to do a "Repair Setup" for Win2K and press F7 when it comes up and says "Press F6 if you need to specify RAID or SCSI drivers:" <-----I think that it the exact syntax. It will not give F7 as an option but if you press it it will change Win2K to a non-ACPI HAL (standard HAL) and it recognizes all 512MB. By using the "Repair" option it does not change any of the rest of your install.
