installed kde3.0.2 with binaries from kde.org, for my Mandrake 8.2 O/S. I did not remove my kde 2.2.2 version ( The Mandrake link at kde.org said it ws not necassary). Now i can boot kde 3.0.2 with no problem (it installed in /opt/kde3/) and my old version is still in .usr/bin/ startkde.
when i had finished installing kde3 it said i could either start it from the console with startkde3 or use these commands "export PATH=$KDEDIR/bin:PATH" and "export KDEDIR=/opt/kde3/" to start it from a windowmanager, so i executed the above commands, and can start kde3 from the login screen.

When i try to start kde2 using either the default or kde options it boot kde3. I tried starting kde2 from the console at level 3, with startkde, but it still boots to kde3 ??. So i thought that as kde3 is up and running i'll remove kde2, So i used the software manager to uninstall all kde2 stuff (libs -base-etc etc) but it wants to uninstall kde3base as well.

How do i either get to run kde2 or uninstall it without removing kde3base, or do i have to manually uninstall the kde2 stuff.
Cheers

Both versions share some of the same file dependencies. It would be more like "How many files from 3.x can I uninstall, before missing features I want".I tried removing an app for a fax machine and ended up removing over half of my graphics apps before I was done. Needless to say I put it back.

Got it done!!, Had to remove them manually with the no-deps tag.

LiNuts, how exactly do you remove KDE 2.2.2 step by step? I'm looking to remove KDE 2.2.2 myself and I'm not sure how.

I can say for certain that you will break dependencies if you rpm -e nodeps kde2.2.2 in mandrake. Other programs are compiled and dynamically linked to kde2.2.2 stuff... (Not to mention qt2)
