I am sure this was asked before, but I would like to know which is the best to use, KDE or GNOME.
I am a new Linux user, I just installed Mandrake 8.2.
I like GNOME better than KDE but it seems that there is more stuff on the internet like screensavers and apps for KDE than there is for GNOME.
If I want to change the look and feel of Linux, what should I use , KDE or GNOME ?

KDE is used more...But I love GNOME, if I use a desktop environment. I like Enlightenment for my window manager.

My vote is on KDE, but my computer is too slow to run it.
If you are looking for software for gnome, there is no shortage.
Go to Gnome.org and click the `get more software' link.
or go to the `gtk' category at freshmeat.
If you need some for KDE go to apps.kde.com.
or go to the `qt' category at freshmeat.
between KDE & Gnome I prefer KDE, but only the older versions, I have tryed KDE3.0.X in both Redhat7.3 & Slackware8.1 and i HATE KDE3.0 so what i done with both distros in take the KDE & QT packages out of older versions of Slackware8 & Redhat7.1 and installed them in the current releases i have installed, i prefer KDE2.1.1 and nothing newer, it just seems too much of a resource HOG and way too buggy...
if KDE is trying to make a desktop enviroment like microsoft windows they are doing a great job including the bugs and crashes ROFLMAO!!!:D

My suggestion is use what you like. That's the beauty of Linux. You have choice. Depending on my mood I will use either Gnome or Windowmaker. You can still use most KDE apps in Gnome, so long as KDE is installed on your system. It doesn't really matter what you use so long as you like it.:D

I'm going through the same thing... I like gnome better but there seems to be a shortage of good themes and such for it unlike KDE which has an abundance. I really wish I could get Libranet to upgrade gnome to v2 but it won't do it.

Hi,
I'm using KDE myself, I read somewhere that KDE should be more stable but that Gnome has more of the latest functionality.
But I use several Gnome programs under KDE, especially Evolution and Red Carpet.
You should definatly check out Red Carpet, in eases installing new software by taking care of verifying packages and downloading the necessary packages to meet dependency probs. I love it!
Ciao

Have you tried doing a google search for an apt-get source that includes gnome2? Then all you'd have to do is apt-get it...

I tried apt-get for gnome2 also tried it with synaptic.. neither will do it, keep telling me there are broken packages.. even tried using the apt-get -f... no luck. (someone told me to try that for broken packages)
