I've been asked to setup a chat server for a friend and need some recommendations.

I'm looking for something that has password support. I login as user "foo" and no one else can login as "foo" for the entire session I'm logged in. It should have support for at least 100+ users. I'd also like it to be free and I'm not really concerned about whether or not it runs in Linux. If it runs on Win2k that's fine too.

So far I've seen havChat (http://www.hav.com) but it's not free, although it does provide the features that I'm looking for.

Thanks.

Hi !

Try Jabberd (http://www.jabber.org)

Maybe if i can convince my boss i will let it run in our company network .... if i can convince my boss .
Anyhow it has been tested with 10,000 users ... but with a standard linux kernel it will "just" support 1024 .....
Anyhow you can have your own searchable User directory / Gateways to MSN/ICQ/AIM ... all that kind of goodies .
It will run under linux and Windows ... so thats pretty kewl !

I have been very pleased with PTLink. It has a full range of services, nickserv, chanserv, etc. Easy to get going, and easy to administer. I don't run it much, but drop me a line, and I will put it on, we can play with it, see what you think.

I reccommend IRC. It takes a little time setting up, but it can do so much. User limit will definantly not be a problem.

The best server is Unreal IRCd @ www.unrealircd.com
The best client (windows) is mirc @ www.mirc.com

Hope this helps

If you dont want to run the server yourself, check out irc.soofas.co.uk for a quick and relialbe network

Thanks, but my friend doesn't want to be using IRC.
