.htaccess setup?

I know how to setup a.htaccess .htpasswd combo. I would like to setup .htaccess to require a username/password comob however it would be nice if it didn't need the seperate .htpasswd file.

I believe I had a htaccess file like this in the past but have since lost it.

Any wanna past me a sample?

Thank you for the information, that is very similiar to every other tutorial I have found. I was hoping to find one without the need for a seperate password file.
