Greetings.
I used to have Mandrake 8.2 installed on my system, but I couldn't install KDE 3.0.1 nor GNOME 2.0. I wanted to have the previous versions overwritten by the newer counterparts, but I had nothin but bad luck with it. With KDE 3, I couldn't use the "rpm -Uvh" nor the "rpm -u" command. With Gnome 2, there's no link to download the files for the Mandrake distro. I heard one could use Garnome to install Gnome 2, but I don't know how to configure the necessary file so I could overwrite the GNOME 1.4 included with Mandrake 8.2. Any help would be greatly appreciated since Neowin.net doesn't have the answers.

Sounds as if you might be ready to try Gentoo (http://www.gentoo.org/)
:D Portage :D
Sorry, I never did like dependency heck either, so I switched rather than fight.

There's no reason why you can't have KDE 3.0.1 or 2 with Mandrake 8.2
Download all the RPMs into an empty directory, go in as root in a console and type urpmi *
This will work, really. I have done this on several PCs now and it has never failed, trust me.
[title] I like at rpmfind.com but I found like 8675... I have no idea which ones I need... or want... or anything.... Are there any tutorials out there?

I used to have Mandrake 8.2 installed on my system ...
An you still can, if you want to. That's the distro I use. When I did my latest re-install (due to a new hard drive -- it was voluntary!!), I did NOT install KDE at all. I had KDE 3.0.1 on a different CD, so after installing Mandrake (sans KDE) I did an install from the KDE3 CD.
There are better ways than installing from a CD, and the urpmi * method above is superior when installing the rpm packages from the hard drive. Anyway, I followed the usually prescribed sequence of starting with the QT library (see the FAQs at KDE and at Mandrake and elsewhere (http://www.atechsol.net/kde3.html) ), installed the asked-for dependencies, took care of the KPersonalizer problem, verified that my path was updated correctly, and pressed on. KDE3 has its quirks, but seems stable on my ancient warrior ThinkPad 365XD (P120/72MB/2.1GB), it just takes patience.
As for Gnome, I don't use it, so I can't help you there. Maybe someone else can. Good luck to you :) .

Don't feel bad 3m00, I can't seem to get KDE3 to work at all either.
The most promenent Mandrake Expert said that it was broken
and that it would take awhile to fix. Many folks have had the same issues. I can't even find a complete one-stop site for all the deps. But hey, there's always MDK 9.0.

Interesting!! Anyone have some idea how I can break the news to my laptop. It thinks that KDE 3 is running just fine and has the audacity to show KDE 3 to me :D :D .

Never mind! I'm going to download Mandrake 9.0 Beta 3 soon which does have KDE 3.0.2 and Gnome 2 included! ;) Thanks for the help, though!
