I really think it is a shame that so many linux distributions default to KDE and GNOME. The fact is that a lot of new linux users are trying it out on slower computers, and when they see how long KDE takes to load on a 486/66 as compared to Windoze, they may become discouraged.

I personally prefer BlackBox, even though my computer is a relatively fast one (Intel 733MHz/256M RAM), but I also like KDE for certain things too. Most of the time I work in the console so I use neither.

Anyway, I am new, so my opinion probably doesn't amount to much, but why not come up with a minimal Window Manager that is fast like fluxbox and BlackBox and all the other small ones, but one that is also similar to Windoze (like KDE) --just to make the transition easier.

Just a thought (please don't hurt me!).

Shriekback... been a while since I heard those lyrics. What does fluxbox have over blackbox anyway?

couldn't tell you about the difference between the two, I am using fb because it is the first one I grabbed (though slack comes with bb, so I saw a cool screenshot)

and, yes, the correct band ID !!
Shriekback is my all-time favorite band, how oldschool are you? that quote is pretty obscure

have you tried xfce? It is not bad. I haven't given it a good run yet though. I prefer waimea.

"Oil and Gold" was the first record (and I do mean 'record') that ever bought.

IMHO it still belongs in the top 100 of albums produced last century.

berb: Congrats and welcome to Fluxbox. Once you go flux everything else sux :)

Jason: I agree. Redhat is lucky their install is so easy because that's why I keep buying their distros. A lot of things they've done recently have pissed me off. My god, how hard can it be to include blackbox, fluxbox and several other of the tiny window managers that are so slick on their distro? I hate GNOME and KDE DEs with a passion. I like the gnome panel for consistentency between window managers but I don't care for the rest of the bloated crap.

As far as the differences go between blackbox and fluxbox they are pretty minor but important to me like iconified windows in the task bar, keygrabber and a background that doesn't change when the theme does.

Well, I'm not a big fan of Mandrake, but I'm staying with them for a while until I get a little more comfortable with linux in general. But, they do include BlackBox, Window Maker and a couple other of the smaller Window Managers.

I would love to try something besides those that I have tried, I went with BlackBox because I put it on a newbie friend of mine's box and liked how fast it loaded (he has a P100! KDE took LITERALLY 3 Minutes).

As I said in my first reply, I have a 733MHz Intel w/256M, so KDE loads fine, and there's really nothing wrong with it except for how big it is and how long it takes to load. Blackbox opens and is ready to go as soon as I can type the command.

Where might I go to get fluxbox?

You can do that with gimp, File - Acquire - Sceenshot or with imagemagick.
