If anyone has had the problem on not having a cable modem, or a broadband connection. and has have to result to 56k to download Mandrake 8.2, Please help me, and show me how to setup folders and then if there is some special process to burn to a cd to install and boot from CD. Yes i know 56k is not the best way to download Mandrake, but i have no choice. Even if I have to download it piece by piece by piece. If you were wondering , I am crazy to attempt this, but i have lots of free time on my hands
So if you are more experieaced than me in linux, I NEED HELP(not mental^_^)

E-mail me or post on this topic,
Thanks!

Um, Well I have found the 3 iso images, yet i can't downloadthem on the Main Mandrake site, Server errors.

I am guessing you are downloading Mandrake from Windows? If so, get a download manager like flashget or whatever and download the .iso images. They are 650 megs each, but you only need the first one to install Mandrake. The first (and second I think) iso image is bootable.

It would be much easier to download the 3 iso images and burn those images to cd. That way the cds will be bootable and less trouble to install.

Why not get the CD from Discount Linux CDs (http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/index.php) or Cheapbytes (www.cheapbytes.com/) or Linux Central (http://linuxcentral.com/) ?

If you're prepared to tie up your phone line for 40 or 50 hours per cd, you can do it. I recommend the ISO images using a download manager. I've found Getright to be reliable, an older version, 3.? DAP lost over 500mb on me when I tried it.
Use the ftp mirror sites and try several if you don't get a decent download rate. Getright will let you change URLs on the same file. On the west coast time zone I've found the download rate stays good until 10 or 11am and is sometimes better than early in the night -- midnight to 2am.
But beware -- the last two distros I downloaded this way have fatal errors on them. Red Hat 7.3 has a cd check on the opening page, Mandrake doesn't. Both have a mid5sums check if you learn how to use it. Now I wish I had.
Good luck.

Damn, I live in Canada. Actually I just borrowed RH 7.3 from a friend at work, and I re-downloaded disc 1 of Man 8.2. It can be done -- when you live alone and also have a cell phone.

one place that you might want to keep in mind for future marathon d/l's is www.linuxiso.org they keep ISO's of about 15+ different distro's and also have mirrors......great for someone on dial up (take my word for it, personally i just spend the dough as i can't afford 40-50 hr downloads)

Ok go here for the 3 mirrors on mandrake 8.2

http://www.linuxiso.org

then pick the i586 unless you have a mac then select the ppc version

you only need the first mirror to install the other 2 cd's are tools and other goodies each disk install about 1 gig of stuff unless you select otherwise. Anyway make sure you dont make the same mistake I did and burn the iso and wonder why it wont boot<<<hey we all have to learn somehow.. Anyway from Nero burning software select the iso you downloaded and then goto>file>burn image. this will make your disk bootable... Hopefully you have either used Partition Magic or formatted and fdisk your HDD. the preferance is yours but I only have a 10 hdd and chose to set aside 3.5 gigs for linux and as I learn how to use it better my win partition will get smaller and smaller. You will then have a dual boot system and so far I love mine.. Good luck and enjoy.... Linux is not easy to learn... but I still love it and will not give up reading everything I can to learn to be an expert.. Have fun
