I have installed lm8.1. That part was easy , but I can't connect to sbc dsl. My ethernet card ( dfe 530tx+ ) is recognized , but I can't connect with pppoe or dhcp. I probably did not fill something in write but I have tried all I know to try.

That card is a major pain with Kernel 2.4. I had the same trouble with the 530 and 550. It seems that the available drivers do not work with the newest Kernel.

You can do two things. One way to fix the problem is download the source files from the manufacturer and compile them according to their instructions. Unless you have some experience with C, I think you will find this to be a real headache.

I suggest you get a card that you know will work with your flavor of Linux. I'm a Red Hat user, so I went witha 3Com card and it was no trouble. I suspect that will be true for Mandrake, too.

Veteran linux users may have other suggestions, but this is the quickest way around the problem.

I am dual booting XP. Logon to internet. click icon in system tray and from Details get your server ID. Sbcglobal.net uses pppoe. Boot linux and open Control Center and open Connection.
Click on the expert mode. click on configure local area network
IP address: (server Id should go here)xx.xx.xx.xxx
netmask:255.255.255.0
Boot protocol: static
start on boot: yes
Now click on Configure Internet
Provider name:sbcglobal.net
dns1:xxx.xxx.x.x ( I had to use the secondary dns obtained from sbcglobal.net)
dns2: blank
Acct login:userid@sbcglobal.net(your email address)
Password:xxxxx
Ether card: eht0

I used my email address as my Hostname
the gateway was: 10.0.0.1
also in one field you are asked for dns server, use the secondary dns address obtained from sbcglobal.net
reboot linux ( Iam not sure this is necessary)
connect and Enjoy
