Guys,

Total Linux newbie here, but I'm getting there..slowly but surely :)

Hey, I've setup Samba and have used Swat to get my XP machine to recognize it on the Network. During this I used Swat to change my NETBIOS name.

In Windows, this would effectively changed the machine name globally, but I notice that there are many references to my machine still being the default "localhost@localdomain" I.E. Terminal sessions, etc...

So, what's the best way to change my hostname for good. My reading is turning up what appears to be more than one way, but no definitives...

BTW, I 'm using Red Hat 7.3 and am really digging it.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

You should be able to do it using the hostname command

hostname new_hostname

and/or editing /etc/hostname (maybe /etc/HOSTNAME)

Thanks!

I figured it out about about 5 minutes after posting....

One weird thing after I changed it is that the GUI doesn't come up anymore upon log in/boot. I have to enter my password in text mode then type "startx"

Any thoughts? I'll continue researching...
