Oh and how do I create transparent menus and overlays for the desktop? Using Gnome, btw.

Not sure if I read this correctly, but can you play cd's with *another* operating system? What kind of processes are you going through to get onto the net? The first problem could be as simple as you don't have your cdrom plugged directly into your sound card (I don't). The second problem sounds like you need to give more details before anyone can answer it.

Sorry about that, I'm new here and wasn't sure if anyone would actually help. Not to worry- now that the consolidation of internet.com has happened, you've got a few thousand LNO members to ready to help solve your problem!
However, do stick with one thread in one forum- it makes it easier for us to get to the bottom of the issue as quickly as possible.
If you've started mutiple posts on the same subject, go back and delete any except the one which seems to be getting the most attention.

ifconfig
will show you your present nic card addresses.
netconfig
is a wizard-like app to walk you through reconfiguring your net cards.
i'd like to help more, but can't without more info.:)
