A Programmer and an Engineer are sitting next to each other on a long flight from LA to NY. The Programmer leans over to the Engineer and asks if he would like to play a fun game. The Engineer just wants to take a nap, so he politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The Programmer persists and explains that the game is real easy and a lot of fun. He explains "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5. Then you ask me a question, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $5." Again, the Engineer politely declines and tries to get to sleep. The Programmer, now somewhat agitated, says, "OK, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $50!" This catches the Engineer's attention, and he sees no end to this torment unless he plays, so he agrees to the game. The Programmer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The Engineer doesn't say a word, but reaches into his wallet, pulls out a five-dollar bill and hands it to the Programmer.

Now, it's the Engineer's turn. He asks the Programmer "What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down on four?" The Programmer looks up at him with a puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all of his references. He taps into the Airphone with his modem and searches the net and the Library of Congress. Frustrated, he sends e-mail to his co-workers -- all to no avail. After about an hour, he wakes the Engineer and hands him $50. The Engineer politely takes the $50 and turns away to try to get back to sleep.

The Programmer, more than a little miffed, shakes the Engineer and asks, "Well, so what's the answer?" Without a word, the Engineer reaches into his wallet, hands the Programmer $5, and turns away to get back to sleep.

I don't see any problem with it making it that far. The server doesn't seem to be borking. Most of those old threads that exploded were caused by the BRB effect which is not possible any more.

It was a exploit in the old ubb code that wouild loose whole chunks (pages) of a thread.
You can't exploit it any more. It would corupt the database and cause UBB to crash and burn eventually. Restoring the BB was very hard. Some people would loose their nicks and post count. At one point I had over 1600 posts LOL. It was also known as a "space time warp."

THAT was 12 hours AFTER Tropical Storm Alison stopped dumping on us. And after the water had receded already 1 foot (see the high water line on the side of the house) We were high ground. It's the latest incarnation of Bill's "I want to control it all and charge a toll for it" and a solid gold monopoly. This time they will try and get it a government recognized one so they can get away with it. Since we all know how badly the government wants "security" ie back door into your box and a "place" (Microsoft) where they can look into all the sites you have been to, what kind of money you have been spending where and who you have been emailing. All inovation will cease if this path is chosen. There will be no sane reason to use the internet if you value your freedom and privacy.

OK, so Microsoft has opened up yet another front in its increasingly desperate war against Linux.

But we're not a compnay with $42 billion dollars in the vault, we're not political or legal decision makers, we're not even hardware manufacturers. So what can we do? How do we fight?

The only thing we can do that will make any difference is to rapidly accelerate our Linux advocacy efforts.

Get out there and find Windows users that would be receptive to Linux! One good way is to use the myriad of cool games that come standard with a Linux distro. Almost everyone loves these games, and the idea that they can have them all for free just may be enough to win you a convert.

Once you've created a Windows refugee, be there to support him/her. Be a mentor, show them this website, keep feeding them apps, get them involved in the local LUG.

Write to (or better yet, call) your local state's attorney general, senator or congressman. Don't assume they're up on the issues and what's at stake.

In the end, Microsoft does not control the fate of Linux & the GPL, we do!

Oh, and if you know any lawyers skilled in technology law, make converting them a priority.

Actually no, we didn't. The hedgehog was basically just a pet that she kept in her classroom instead of at home. Now that I think about it though, that would have made the class a bit more fun... ;)
