I have service with Time Warner. While i was using the windows box gateway i could turn off my pc for several hours, more than 6 actually. And everytime i looged back i had my same ip. I had the same ip address for months. Now with the linux box as the gateway even if i just boot it i will get a different ip. Does anybody have and idea why i could keep my ip with windows as a gateway box but not with linux as a firewall box??

It's just the way certain dhcp clients work in linux. The same thing happened to me. Right now, in FreeBSD, I keep the same ip for months at a time with roadrunner. I'd suggest trying dhclient rather than dhcpcd or pump; perhaps that might remedy the situation.

I dunno if this is related. AT bought my RoadRunner service. For a year, we had 7 day leases from them. I use RH6.2 and pump, which automatically renews the lease before expiration. 2 weeks ago, the leases were cut back to 7 HOURS. I called and was told that there was a shortage of IP's, and this was done to increase the avaialable pool. I don't follow how that would help, if you have X 'puters on the net, you have X IP's being used, but, oh well. I run the box 24X7, but a hardware failure, if I can't get the part, and get it installed in a few hours certainly kills my IP. I do run some servers here with re-pointed addresses, so this is a concern for me. We may be about to see the concept of a "lease" eliminated. I suspect people running servers, (forbidden in the TOS) may be more the idea, than an IP shortage. This way makes it inconvenient, without having to email the customer and upset him. RR and now, AT sends sweepers in here 2, 3 times a week, so they know what I'm running. I bet there are lots of me, too.DSL is slower, but I may be changing over to get static, though that too could be temporary relief. If you are using pump to get a lease, pump -s will reveal the renewal time. Compare it with what the leasing info in winipcfg says. Be sure pump is renewing your lease, you can watch this happen.

You might run your box 24/7, however others don't.. Some people just turn on the computer when they want to use it and off again, kinda like what I did back on Windows so it wouldn't crash when Iw as away. So, they can stretch IP's..

0.02 -> I use dhcpcd with RR and I haven't had an IP change in months. I believe the only time mine changes is if I'm down for more than 6-7 hours...
Furthermore, I've gone to run level 1 a few times to do maint and still have the same IP when dhcpcd inits the connection back in RL3.. It seems strange that yours doesn't stay..
