I have a dedicated Internet Connection. What equipment and software do I need to host my own website? Would rather do this than be at the mercy of a host company. I think.
What kind of cost is involved?
Thanks,
-Mike

check the Term of Service of your broadband ISP, some companies specifically prohibit residential customers from putting up servers. Many cable companies TOS is this way, many DSL companies are either vague on the point or allow "personal use" servers, ie non-commercial.
As far a hardware, a small home site http server can run on almost anything you can load linux on. A 486/pentium with 32MB to 64 MB of RAM will do fine.
A pentium box will even run an email server for family/friends use with no problem.
If you already have linux, just add apache web server (there are some others too) and a nice email package like qmail.
cost can be between $0 and $hundreds
if you haven't used linux alot and want a "starter" server to get you going, check out www.e-smith.org, (http://www.e-smith.org) an easy to use/setup linux server just for beginners ;)
have fun! :)

If you are just using the box as a server 9223 is right you can get by with very little on the equipment end. You could also configure your linux box to act as a gateway for your home network. I setup a network for a small office (about 10 workstations) on an e-machine with 32megs of ram. It ran Apache, qmail, samba, and acted as a gatway for Internet access.

Thanks for the help. Could not connect to the link mentioned above.
Sounds like we're on the right track. Will check my ISP's regs.

While I would have liked to remove my profile and personal information from LinuxNewbie.org, I am not permitted to do so. While I have contacted internet.com for the abuse from the administration at linuxnewbie.org I have to wait for any further action. I used to do the popular posts for Pretty Fonts in Netscapes which was closed to because of Derek who goes under the username "Neurotica". They also have a habit of sabotaging your member ratings so becareful of that. You can learn more about that by visiting my web site or calling me at home. That information is in my signature.
