authentication LDAP

hello

I have 2 machines (linuxs) and I wanna do a distributed authentication using LDAP.
I already did nis before in a lab but I wanna do it now using LDAP.
I am still reading about LDAP , I read that there is backends kind of uses like passwd for authentication and some others for mail
and ..... : Can smbdy tell me more about this

and now I am trying to get some examples of conf file (the file that have all users and passwd.....)

please some help or advices please ?
