Hi,
I have a Pentium 133mhz with 64mb of RAM and I am using it as a server to serve up my family pics and things. However, my uploads off this box are at 15k/sec when I try to download(from and outside machine with T3 connection) an mpeg(or any) file. I have ATT basic cable modem.
How do I speed the connection up?? more RAM? more CPU? ATT says my max uploads are like 150k, I am only getting 10% of that.
thanks

Hmm, something is NOT right, and I can't think of some way to help. Maybe a comparison would be of assistance? This is also AT&T and my Apache is available, see what you get from here. Also, give us your URL and let's see what we can pull from you.

I would rather not post my site here amongst you guys. I am afraid one of you may not be so nice and my machine would be on fire when I got home form work today.
I am trying to ftp into my box, but I am at work behind a firewall and I cant seem to get out from my unix here. Isnt there a way I can ftp through my browser?? like
ftp://mysite.com or somethng? When I do this it says invlid user(I dont have anonymous user login set-up) How do I add -user or soemthing to the above comand??
Thanks

I think it's something like
ftp://user :password@site.com/
I suppose if you just used ftp://user@site.com/ it would possibly prompt you for the password, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm pretty sure AT&T and Comcast cap your uploads.
I am on Comcast and used to upload at 300 k, they capped my uploads a few months ago and I only upload at 15k ... I'm thinking that's your problem.
see ya.

If ur trying to serve a site from ur office it's most likly goin to be a pain unless ur an admin? U might be having ftp problems because they're running a proxy server and ftp may be disabled to keep users from downloading, and wasting bandwidth.

I think what is happening here is a terminoigy problem ATT is talking about 150kbps and you are talking about 15KBps. they are refering to kilobits per sec and you are refering to kilobytes per second. if you work out the math 150kbps/8bits/byte = 18.75bytes/sec theoretical maximum and I think we all know you never get the maximum. so I'd say your doing pretty close to all you can at 15K/sec.

Very good Point, I will have to clairfy that with them. Also my "Dynamic" Ip has been static for the past 2 weeks. I thought changes were to happen every few days for ATT?? Anyone know the ~cost for more upload bandwidth?? just curious.
I am serving this site up from home..not from work.
Thanks for the info.

have you been disconnecting youself from the internet and still getting the same ip? as long as your connected, you'll have the same ip. i have Pacbell dynamic DSL, and if i stay on for a week they kick me off (to stop people from hogging ip address) i'm currently at 6days and 21hours :(
i also have a home website and have the 16kB/s cap (but i only get like 13kB/s upload). I've looked around for high upload, low download conenctions, and most places are pretty expensive.

i've got att, in fl., downloads are about 200 - 250 kb/s, and uploads max about 45 kb/s. If u get a business account ur upload speed will be the same as ur download!

Hey don't gripe too much my max upload with @sucks is 15k/s cause they have it throdled. And at that I'm getting more than they claim to have it capped at. now that sucks expecially when my downloads hit 600+k/s.
