it will be good enough if you don't get cracked :p

do you do backups of important stuff?
do you have nothing important? (this is my backup method ;) )

chances are purty small that you would have trouble with that setup, but how safe is it?

you could set it up and then go to www.vulnerabilities.org (http://www.vulnerabilities.org) and do the scan

well it (the linux box) would be on an internal lan address i assume (i've never tried this internet sharing junk on windows, dunno what it is either. a proxy i understand, but i haven't read up on how this functions), so i'd just be scanning the winbox (which i've done at the shieldsup place and it comes up clean on major ports). i get people knocking a few times a day on the winbox, but zone alarm's seems good enough to keep the script kiddies off.

thought it would give me a chance to fool around without having to stress too much about hardening, or at least let me download all the stuff i need so i can then disconnect and fiddle with firewalling. using this kinda method i could get everything on the linux box updated and then take it off the net to configure it before setting up the router (finally got all the parts for it handy) and having both win and lin box on the net through that.

ugh, internet connection sharing looks nas-T, there's a description of setting it up here (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98). i think i'll look at using some proxy software before jumping in and doing anything.

ICS is actually easy, when it works right

it is easy to make a mistake and then get stuck

the main thing to remember is that the box with the shared connection (be it dial up or nic) runs a mini-dhcp server and gets its ip changed (internal ip) 192.168.0.1, this can be hacked in the registry (i think) but otherwise isn't changable

then you just setup the client using dhcp to get addresses from the ICS box and it should work

good luck! :)

so the card connected to the internet has an ip of <whatever>, and then the internet boxen see the winbox as that 192 address you gave?

wonder why it's so specific. especially if it's just dhcp. you don't need to know the ip address of anything to set up a box to configure itself using dhcp, do you? i mean, i didn't have to enter anything to make the windows box talk to the cable network. unless windows is doing something for me i'm not aware of.

it does sound easy though. maybe i'll play with it tomorrow.

still haven't decided between coyote and freesco for when i get my router put together, but i may just try both out. or if i figure one out enough first just stick with it cuz i'm lazy :D

um, it is NAT , in other words , the network connection to your internal LAN, gets an ip of 192.168.0.1, when you turn ICS on, it changes your ip from whatever it was to this ip address (as i said, i think this can be hacked)

the external connection that you are going to share can be whatever , dial-up/whatever, and it gets its ip as per normal, whatever it would if you weren't trying to share it

cool cool. i could care less what it sets the internal ip to, this is just a hack to get internet connectivity for both machines until i can get a hub for the router.

Using Windows as a router is roughly as intelligent as using the male reproductive member to clean electrical outlets.

Let those who understand be advised.
