DNS servers are not registered anywhere, normally. They have names, but are not usually found in that way, rather by their IP address, as the name can't be found without access to DNS. It's a chicken - egg kinda thing.

to run a BIND dns NAME server, you must have at least 2 ip addresses.

then just goto like, network-solutions or where ever you registered your domain at, and add your domain as name servers.
assign Ips, select ns1.domain ns2.domain (or whatever).

and then add the required entrys to your zone file in BIND (or whatever you use for DNS).

if this is what you want, but you dont know bind or whatnot, just post.

hmm.. it was not clear to me. we have our domain here. ourdomain.maindomain.com

and we want house our own DNS server so that whenever we want to activate e.g. mypage.com.whatever(correct me if im wrong), we dont have to call our main office and tell them blah! blah! blah! and so on and so fort..

actually they are (main) the one who activate our domain. u mean to say i will tell them that we will house our own DNS server? thanx in advance

well that 2nd last post is a bit confusing.

Say for example, the 'master' domain is foo.com and you want to create bar.foo.com, pipe.foo.com, etc... which ever machine is primary dns for foo.com, would add these 'other' domains in it's zone files. I assume by your post, this means the Main Office. Now, for you to be able to map ip's to names under foo.com - ie, bar.foo.com, you need access to this zone file / primary dns machine.

there's a hundred and one ways to do it, well not really but... depending on what your needs are. Do these bar.foo.com machines need to be accessed from the internet, or a local network? if the latter, you've got options. say, you've got bar.foo.com in your location, you can set DNS up on there (bar.foo.com) to allow for naming of local stations - with a 4th level rusty.bar.foo.com - on and on.

yah?

yah! it should be accessible by the internet. and lets say for example we want to activate www.ourplace.com.xx, (http://www.ourplace.com.xx,) i would like also, that we will be the one to activate that. that is if its possible.
(correct me if im wrong)

and one thing also. can anyone give me a site about how to build one?(DNS). yah, i know there are alot of NHF's but i think its outdated. is there a current one? and tackles more things than the previous how-to's? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif

it's posted a few messages up. the dns howto. i'm about to do the same thing this weekend. probably just make a secondary for my friends and i at first. then, use as my primary.. then use for my domain records.

yah of course i'd tried it! but the thing is i can only test the "caching only" name server. what i need is a complex how-to so that i cant test a real domain anyhow.
anyway thanx.
