URL query string's won't work

I have my whole set up working(latest stable builds of PHP, Apache, and MySql) and it all works great until I try to use query strings. I'm still learning so I am using a tutorial and I follow it precisely without fail and it still just doesn't register anything when I use the variable by the same name as in the URL. I'm using the tutorial located here WebmasterBase - PHP & MySql tutorial (http://www.webmasterbase.com/article/528/38). I'm new with linux and I've found that often tutorials can be outdated and with newer version you have to learn the changes. Is this tutorial not explaining how you would accomplish this right on the latest builds of PHP? Is there another way to do it. I can use post forms just fine and everything else so far for that matter. Please Help!

if you want a QUERY_STRING for example in php 4.2.1 (most recent as of today)

use...

$_SERVER["QUERY_STRING"]


as a reference to the query string value(s).


also...

$GLOBALS["QUERY_STRING"]


and I believe that the following also works:


getenv("QUERY_STRING")
