Someone alerted me to this mod for Quake 3.
planetquake.com/annihilation/
It looks much like RtCW and plays a lot like it. And you wouldn't have to spend $50 for the Windows version. You could buy the native Linux port of Q3. They are saying Beta 2 should be really nice. I know they have a lot of mappers working on it.
