If there are so many linux developers and linux is open source, then why aren't there more interesting RPG games for linux. Everyone is always talking about lame *** quake 3, which is 4 years old. I wish the linux community would be more creative and make some new original games.

We need Neverwinter Nights and Civ3... then I'll be happy..
I like Strike Force alot, and SAS - in to the lions den is looking good.
If you feel the need to complain, why don't you start a project, use the Crytal Space engine to build a great Free software game.... if you don't comtribute, you don't collect !

I too am looking forward to Neverwinter Nights, though I still prefer real D&D.

I don't think he's being a troll, he's not happy with the gaming selection on Linux and he's voicing his unhappiness. What's wrong with that?
Gaming options under linux are very limited. You're pretty much stuck to little Tetris and Tron clones, or a few big name games that have been ported over. Sure... there's wine, but it's not really the same as playing games written for linux.
I'm working on a game.
I hope you don't mind ASCII art. :D

Look people, anyone who is interested in getting together and making some GOOD games, I'm waiting. I've started Little Green Men Entertainment, my open source game development team. I plan to have the design of the games done by the community, and not by the team. So we are looking for ideas, and developers. I think the site is down now, but it's at http://lgme.scurvypenguin.net
I'm interested, but I doupt I would be of any help. I've been struggling with ideas for a game for 6 months and the one that I have now isn't very developed. I could do some concept art if I could gain access to a scanner...

as far as civ3, call to power is there for linux, same guy.. there are a few, you just have to actaully look, and well, you can use Wine, its getting much better, but i agree, you have to understand though, linux is in its infancy, its growing everyday, literally .. http://www.tuxgames.com .. my personal fav right now is Uplink, i posted about it in another thread, http://www.introversion.co.uk , its good game pretty original, .. well good luck , and more games are coming ..

More games are coming indeed. :) I'm gonna set up the official LGME (Little Green Men Entertainment) discussion board tonite, once I get the site working again we can all start talking about what linux needs in the way of games, and try to get some people together to make it happen. That's what LGME is all about.

All you frustrated gamers using linux: help all the developers out by taking a break from wasting hours and weeks of your life rewinning the same old games you've already finished a dozen times.
figure out for us what makes a game a good game. forget that you don't know jack about how to code. just pretend you're a designer and think of a fun game.
most OSS game projects have plenty of technical talent. it's just hard to come up with some truly new/fun ideas.
or if that's not challenging enough for you, the really scare resource for open source gaming is good graphic art. so maybe you bums ought to roll up your sleeves and make us some images we can use.
trust me - the thrill of victory you get from creating something real feels much better than getting your character enough experience points to get to the next level.
or go to libsdl.org and start doing your homework and become one of us!

Waxmop: First of all, thanx for the lecture there. Hopefully someone will read it. Second, if you are interested in officially being part of Little Green Men Entertainment, just say please :)

Q: Is there any boundarys to the game ideas which people (such as myself) would provide?

I have seen quite a few linux games which all seem to require X.
I know the comparison cannot be made but... Do you remeber when all the best windows games run in dos as windows didn't have a good games API?
I was wondering if X actually provides something of use to games programmers at all, why should it? it is a window managing server (i think).
Do all these games run in X as it (X) requires glibc, and requiring X necessitates a stable glibc on a machine??
If a game were put forward, might it not be better to quite X and get the game to run without an X server running in the background, Might this make it quicker?

A lot of games require X because there's no OpenGL support for consoles. You've heard of GLX, right? There you go -- GL extensions for X ;)
There are a few games (Linberto comes to mind) that use SVGALib, which is text-mode only, but it only uses SVGA hardware (2-D), so no hardware acceleration.
Yes, I do remember when all the good games were for DOS, but that was only because Windows (at that time) ran in a REALLY SLOW video mode, and the games couldn't change it to something faster (i.e. 320x240x8-bit color). Now, more games are for Windows than DOS because Windows has hardware acceleration (DX7/8, OpenGL, etc). Same sort of thing with X vs. the console.

Hi everyone!
I'm know a little about C++ and Java, and I think I could come up with some good idea for games for you guys! I'm confused about what libraries are used for programming games though, can someone help?
I have a sourceforge account under jrcow97, and there's a board/strategy game there I'm trying to learn from called Klack. The author is Andre Kloss. If anyone wants to join me and be a developer please go over and check it out. It's a simple game, and there's lots to learn from it!

Super Bakemono : The scurvy penguin site seems to be down. Is it coming back up soon, as I am interested in what you are trying to do?
I've done a fair bit of C++/Java and OpenGL in the past.
Mucking about with web stuff recently though. :)

Mandrakes coming out with a gamer's edition!
It's going to come out with The Sims!
I just love that game, it's so addictive to recreate your friends and make them do funky things. :D

Hi,
the kind of games I'm interested in are strategy games like C&C, altough I would like some more "magic" and mythology...
Also I looking for a Lemmings-clone, It was a wonderful game to play under DOS, the graphics and so aren't that impressing but those little green men (sorry can't describe 'em any other way :) ) wer SO funny! Especially the self-destruct-mode...
hehe...
