ok, I found this little beauty about half a year ago while fooling around with BeOS...

I know it's an old (*very* old) game, but I know that somewhere out there people still play it, and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or secrets for it (ie. ways to steal from shops, ways to build up experience quickly, ways to identify objects, etc., etc.)... this is one kick-butt game...

actually, it's kinda embarrassing to be playing such a graphically primitive game, but this kind of fun is hard to find elsewhere :D

Is it the graphical or non-graphical version of the game? I play it on our FreeBSD box at work when no one is looking :D.

non-graphical...with colors ;)

my mom hates how I spend almost all of my time when I'm home playing this game... it's so...addictive :D kinda like a bad heroin habit (but cheaper!, and possibly healthier for the mind)

I feel so dirty... I had a level 11 [experience] Valkyrie with silver dragon scale mail, Mjollnir (both of which I wished for...it was such a great game :) ), and about half of the potions and scrolls identified...when I put a conical hat on her and discovered it was a cursed dunce cap! Oh, the horror!

Not the dunce cap! *LOL* ... did ya ever get adicted to muds? I got addicted to them after nethack just because it was some what alike but with other people :).

My roommate got addicted to MUDs. He did nothing but play them, failed all of his classes and got kicked out of college. He's taking several courses this summer and will hopefully be readmitted this fall.

Awful addiction...

Damn! I thought that game phased out years ago! Im gonna hafta find that one again...

Anyway, the ONLY cheat I can remember is that there _is_ a way to get out of a shop without paying for anything (ie: stealing). There is a book (cant remember what its called, but its an ivory book if memory serves me right) that when you read it you "get a wrenching sensation" and you teleport to a random section of the level. _BUT_ there is a drawback. After you flee the shop, you get attacked with many many MANY guards bearing cream pies! If you're nimble enough, you can actually get them to attack each other because there's so many.

It's not really a cheat, infact, I dont even know if there's such thing in this game.

Phew. Had to really scrape the back of the brain there. But I think I have a new hobby now! Oh the memories! Oh the fun!

let pets steal stuff for you. it takes patience though.

i stumbled upon this game a couple weeks ago (playing the graphical DOS version). i keep getting killed down around dungeon level 6... prolly cuz i'm too lazy to run around leveling up.

DEFINITELY a fun game. still haven't hardly figured out anything. 'cept i have figured out that i very much like using a chaotic male monk.

I have the same problem...actually, I make the mistake of going down levels after level warps and finding myself in that shopping center (on levels 6 and/or 8), and getting whacked by the guards and/or monsters

what i REALLY hate is getting killed by water demons on the shopping level (love them fountains :D ), and then coming back down a few games later or whatever and getting whacked again.

Awwwww MAN! So much for getting ANY work done.

I got hooked on LARN back on my 8088 in the early nineties and then I found nethack about 4 years back for both linux and DOS and was thrilled....didn't get anything done for weeks.

*sigh* Hope my boss will be patient :D

hey, isn't Diablo supposed to be kinda based on nethack? if it is, I might want to give it a spin...

I find it interesting that such an old game can be so good...this one goes with me to every computer I use, whether it's a winders or a *nix box... the only drawback is that it's killer on my productivity.

btw, is the human-neutral-male character the easiest to start out with? when I use the others, I seem to get clobbered within the first four levels (but I've had relative success with the valkyrie)
