ive setup a cs dedicated server on my linux box and i read somewhere that external clients and internal(on my lan) would be able to connect to the server, so how would this be done? ive tried a couple things with the server config file but still only internal computers can connect even if i set my ip(+ip externalip) at the server startup.

Do you have access to the router/gateway box? It may be that you have firewall/filtering rules that are preventing connections in from the outside world. If you're on somebody elses network, then you may just be screwed :(

i have no rules in my firewall that restrict connection i had the server setup but when my friend tried to connect it said that the server was only setup for lan computers to connect to it

You need to be typing into the dedicated server's console for this. I seem to remember a command-line switch for HLDS, but I don't remember where I read it or what it was, and this should work too.
