All attempts I've made at installing the latest nvidia drivers after upgrading to xfree86 4.01 have the same result, x crashes when I try to run it.
Is there anyway to get quake 3 running properly without installing those drivers?
Quake 3 runs now, but very, very jerky.

Try writing a startup script that explicitly points at your driver(s).
I have my Q3 startup at www.afn.org/~afn57538/v3linux/q3start (http://www.afn.org/~afn57538/v3linux/q3start) - but it is for Voodoo3 cards. You should be able to modify it tho...

Which distro are you running? What error message do you get? When I tried installing X 4.0.1 and the Nvidia drivers on Mandrake, X wouldn't start. I'm afraid to try it in Slack, now.

Thats exactly the same problem I'm having, once I've install Xfree86 4.01 and installed the drivers, X stops working. I'm using Mandrake 7.1 with a Riva TNT2.
The rpms don't even recognize the x version, the 0.9-5 GLX one(which requires 4.01) and 0.9-4 (for 4.0) both have X as an unsatisfied dependancy.
Ph34r: What driver would I point it to instead?

No idea. I'm a Voodoo3 user, and happy because of it http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Use the tarballs to intall Xfree 86 4.0.1 and the nvidia drivers in mandrake 7.1, I know they work because they worked for me and several others. There are also good howto's on www.evild3d.net (http://www.evild3d.net) in the articles section. Check them out.

Just in case you feel adventurous, I tried it in Slack. Everything worked perfectly. I'm now playing Quake 3 with hardware acceleration! I love Slackware.
