Just wanted to see if anyone knew of any great games that DON'T require a 3D card?? I'm craving some much needed down-time on the 'ol cranium, but I'm stuck with a jank-*** on-board SIS6326 that doesn't work very well with the XFree86 3D Acceleration enabled. And with no bones to pick up a new card anytime soon, (unless somebody wanted to trade one for two 56K internal modems and a brand new NetGEAR NIC???, have to remember to post that in the hardware section) I'm sorta stuck with what I've got. Would prefer some sort of decent graphics, but I know I'm asking alot. Doesn't really matter what kind of games, but something action-ish would be cool.

Snes9x: Snes emulator. If your computer can run it at a decent speed, you can have ~3500 games

Rogue-like: ADOM, NetHack, Moria, Zanband, Rogue. ASCII adventure games. Go especially for ADOM and NetHack

X Games: xjump, xscavanger, xkoules

Word games: boggle, hangman

Are you talking about like commercial games, or little toy games?

If the former, you can see a full selection at lokigames.com. Most really need a 3D card, but you can look through the list to check. SimCity 3000 would work well without one, I'm sure. As would Alpha Centauri. It's not an action game, but you should still give it a try -- I don't care for the turn-based strategy genre much, but I love the game -- and it's generally acknowledged as one of the best of all time.

If you're talking about little toy games, then Xkoules is awesome, plus there are hundreds of other little arcade games for X.

Thanks for the ideas, tried snes, just need to find some good roms for it. As far as commercial games, dont' really want to spend the money until I have a decent 3D card. (So I can get the GOOD games) Something like SimCity or Roller Coaster Tycoon would be sweet. (Dunno if those are available in Linux, but that genre wouldn't be bad.)

Thanks again, and still welcoming suggestions!

As I said, Loki has Simcity 3000 (the Ultra Mega Unlimited Gold Deluxe edition, I believe) for Linux. No Roller Coaster Tycoon, though, but they DO have Railroad Tycoon 2, though, and a railroad is just a rollercoaster that doesn't make you vomit.

Loki is really the only publisher of commercial games for Linux, so if you look at Loki's product list, you'll basically see all that there is.

You can order most of Loki's games from Amazon, if you like. Search for "Loki Software". Here's what Amazon has now:

SimCity 3000 Unlimited: $49.99
Alpha Centauri + Alien Crossfire: $49.99
RailRoad Tycoon 2: $35.99
Ultimate Solitaire: $14.99
Heavy Gear 2: $39.99
Heretic 2: $24.99

You get the idea.

Actually, if you go to http://www.ebworld.com they have had most of the games by LokiGames on sale for the last week or two. Most of the titles Craig mentioned can be had for $9.99. I just ordered 'Heros of Might and Magic 3' and 'Soldier of Fortune' the other day ... cant beat getting two great games for less than 20 bucks. I believe the same price applies at local Electronic Boutique stores if there is one in your area.
