I'm trying to run q2 it works fine in windows on my p133 64MB RAM (I linked from there to /usr/local/games/quake2/baseq2).

When I try to play using the linux binaries from idsoftware I have three problems. I used

cd /usr/local/games/quake2
./quake2 +set vid_ref softx

The screen was cut in half vertically, game play was much chopier than in linux, and I couldn't use my mouse.

Can someone tell me either another way to run quake2 (the half screen is fixed when I run from console instead of x and it gets kinda less chopy, but I can't use my mouse...)

Try changing the settings in /etc/vga/libvga.conf, so maybe you can play in the console after you have the right config

The quake howto at www.linuxdoc.org (http://www.linuxdoc.org) has all the info you need to setup software mode q2.

What kind of video card do you have? It may be possible to play in 3d mode instead....

Heh, I have an onboard ATI GT chipset with 2MB Synchronous Graphics RAM; VESA feature connector; DDC 2b support

Or so the manual says ...

(PS it would be cool to play better games like Perfect Darck for N64 online multi)

Oh, I think I forgot to mention that linux also won't detect my wheel as a third button, and the windows won't go fullscreen completely. I think I got the rest of the mouse working except the refresh rate is really slow (like 15Hz)
