I originally posted this in someone elses thread but decided that it was rude to do so. So here it is

Hey everyone, Just thought that I would pass along the word that I still cannot get UT to run in linux.

I have tried running the setup program several times from both root and my user login. I have recieved errors before, now I just cannot start the game. I click on the UT icon and nothing happens, I go to the shell and cd to the UT directory and type UT and get command not found. I am getting frustrated.

I am using RedHat 7.1 and have fully supported hardware. My video is a Diamond Fusion (voodoo banshee). The install program I used is "UT-INSTALL-436-GOTY.RUN".

One other note, during the install, when the installer is converting the files, in the terminal window before each file conversion it says "Warning not using preference directory" (or something very simular to that). I do not know if that has anything to do with it but it did it during each install that I have done. Also, when I tried to install under my login, the default directory /usr/local/games shows as no write privileges. I changed the install path to /home/Michael/ut which is my home directory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and anyone that can help me will be considered for knighthood (well maybe not, but I will be happy anyway).

okay, a couple of things...
does the computer freeze? if it does, then update the video drivers. if not, then do this...
if you can get to a windoze machine, install UT on it, and copy all of the maps from the windows box to the linux box (remove the ones from the linux install, of course). for some reason, when UT is installing on linux, it doesn't copy the maps over correctly...also, check your screen resolution...start out at 640x480...seriously...then work your way up. I had the same prob, but updating the drivers and copying the maps over worked for me.

Make sure you install as root if you want the "ut" command to work.

Make Doubly sure your video drivers are working. With mine I was able to play Quake3 no problem but UT was just a Slow POS. Mouse would move every 3-4 seconds.
I am sorry I can't help you with the 3DFX drivers. I will go look though.

OK. The installing as root to get the ut command to work helps. Also I have a dual boot machine, so copying the maps over is a piece of cake.
I just cannot get it to run right now. I had installed before as root and it would not fully load then, something about missing glide files or something.
Does RedHat7.1 have the latest drivers for Voodoo banshee? I assumed that they did because it through the Voodoo 5 are listed in the options at setup, so I figured that if it would handle Voodoo 5 that the Banshee would be a piece of cake.
Anyway, I will try again tomorrow if I get the chance and post back with any issues.

Thanks

Missing Glide file has to do with you video card. Didn't get a chance to check on the Voodoo Driver install, sorry.

When installing as root make sure you put it into the /usr/local/games dir. I had troubles when I installed to a different path.

I don't know if this is true but I have not been able to get it to work when logged in as root. Install as root play as user. Is this a correct assumption?
