linux half-life not working out

Hi, I followed the Linux halflife howto @ http://crazney.yi.org/lhl/ and i'm still having a problem
starting half life. basically the menu paints itself and I am seft with that
on the screen, but in the console I see this message:

at that point all i can do is 'killall -9 wine' to clear the halflife menu
off of my screen. this happens when i run hl.exe as root or as a user.

any ideas as to why this might be?

I was told while playing counter strike the half life mod that there was no linux version of half life I'd have to run it under wine is this true or are you using a linux version please say linux, oh please
