After installing all the necessaries for Q3 (base install, MesaVoodooGL, plus maps) I thought I was ready to run Q3. (By the way, I installed using the official Linux CD, not a patch for a Windows CD.)

However, on running the command "quake3", I get the message "running in restricted demo mode", after which it searches for ~/demoq3/default.cfg . Which of course fails because the file I've actually got is ~/baseq3/config.cfg .

How do I get it to look in the right place? And why is it looking in the wrong place to start with?

I'm using a Voodoo 3 AGP card which works fine for Tux Racer, despite an earlier problem I had with Glide which I don't think is relevant because I've tried running Q3 with and without Glide installed (see post in "Hardware" forum). This is really hacking me off because I got Q3 working using SuSE 7.0 a few months back, but now I'm on v7.3 I can't sort it.

Your problem has an easy solution:

Don't even invoke the installer off the CD. Just make a Q3 dir and a baseq3 dir inside of that, then copy the pak files over.

Apply the Linux 1.31 patch and you should be good.

And hey.. since the pak files are all on your hard drive already, you should be good to go with just the patch from online.

Hey, forgot I posted this one...

Sounds like good advice, Siskmarek... it's 1:30am here in sunny England, and I'm just about to give it a go :)
