When I play Quake2, the sound is extremely lagged. Like, 3 seconds. I remember that in halflife, this can be fixed by tweaking the _snd_mixahead variable, and since HL is based on q2 engine....... but no. What do I do?

There's a fix for this specific issue in Half-Life. It was incorporated into the newer WineX releases, and maybe they committed it to the Wine tree too. Might be worth a shot anyway.

You can play Quake 2 natively under linux now. Just track down renlev's Quake 2 sdl port and compile it. =')
And quake 2 has almost the same console command: snd_mixahead "x.xxx"
don't forget to do a snd_restart after that!

Ahh... yes. I must try that. Next time I get access to cable, I will.
I tried that BLOODY snd_mixahead. It got pooey at me (didnt work) Oh well... I've actually noticed that its wine thats giving me this sound trouble. I recently re-installed linux, and I accidently deleted the linux binaries for Quake3. Doh! So I tried playing the Win version thru wine... egh. I just wish there were linux binaries for Halflife. That would be very nice :D

Dont' we all? ='P
y'know, the Quake 2 source isn't that big at all... a dial-up user can easily stomach the download.
Come on... you know you want to! (http://icculus.org/~relnev/main.php)
My mistake for the past few posts in different threads.. its RELNEV, not renlev. ='P

Gee, that wasnt subtle now... was it :D
Thanks man, I'll get round to it.
...actually, I know its the wrong post (I'll prolly post it elsewhere) but is there a download manager for linux? A linux getright, or something?

Wow, I'm impressed... compiling it was almost painless, installing it and running it was perfect! And I dont know about you, but I think it looks better than in Windows... and I also get about 30fps more than in windows. I hear the save feature is borked, but I play multiplayer anyways...
<homer>hmmm, linux ports... drool...</homer>

*grins* See? Aren't you glad Carmack released Q2 under the GPL? ^_^
I've heard the same thing about the borked saved games, but I've experienced no such problems... perhaps they're talking about OLD saved games that were under 3.20... and I can see then. Every version of Quake 2 usually broke saved games any way...
But I can quicksave, save, load, quickload without any problems whatsoever...

For a download manager, look at nt (http://freshmeat.net/projects/downloaderforx/).
Looks like you need the Q2 data files for the game to run, like with Quake 1. Is there a shareware version or something? I really want to play it (especially if I compile it myself....), but I don't own the original game. :/ Or, where can I get the game? Preferably for like $10 or so, but whatever.

Hunt it down in bargain bins around places... or on ebay.. that's where I got my copy of Quake2 and two mission packs, plus one netpack. ^_^
id software is selling the entire quake trilogy in one box.. kinda looks dark.. looks like an ammunition case with... yeah.. ammunition showing through a little window. You get all three quakes and a Quake 4 poster.
It's a pretty good deal if you ask me... I'm considering getting it myself, even though the quake 4 poster is kinda small, and the image that they used is really pixellated, and they FOLDED the poster (gah!)...
You should be able to go download the Quake 2 demo from someplace like fileplanet... planetquake probably has a direct link to it so i'd head there first rather than use fileplanet's search engine.
And if you want to test it out right away you can probably download a user level and slap it in your baseq2/maps dir, though without any textures or anything it will be checkerboard city.. which is actually kinda trippy and cool... (if you're using software mode.. hardware accel it gets more interesting).

I managed to find the demo on id's FTP site. The link off their main site said it wasn't there, but some other page had a link straight onto their FTP site, which worked, so yeah. Just finished playing the demo, it's pretty cool. The only problem is, I can't switch graphics modes inside the game, or it segfaults like mad. I'm looking for a console reference so I can set the res on the command line, we'll see. But even at 640x480, it's pretty cool.
Unfortunately, I can't find that 3-pack on id's site... do you have linkage? Or did you just see it in a store somewhere?
I'll keep my eyes open in the bargain bins too.

Walk into any serious gaming store and you should see it there... also look around at online etailers for the threepack.
The console command for switching modes (in hardware accelerated mode) is "gl_mode n", where n is a number between 1 and 9, I think.. one being lowest, 9 being highest..
6 is 1024x768.. 4 is 800x600, 3 is 640x480.. blah blah.. you can find out the rest of the stuff for yourself...
that is odd that it segfaults when you change resolutions in-game... it doesn't do that to me.
