I installed Half-life perfectly(so it seemed) and then when i went to run it winex hl.exe it loads alright, but I get an error message(looks like a half life message) it says:

Could not open MCI file for playback: 279: Cannot use 'all' as a device name with the specified command.

I pressed "OK" a few times and it loaded. However, it is very slow and is only in a little window in the top right corner of the screen(of course i want the whole screen =D) i tried playing the game, and i heard the voice in the beginning but the screen just gets smaller and all i see is the "Loading" screen. (I can hear the voice though)

I have a GeForce 2 MX and I have the WineX-1.0-3.i386 rpm (released December 25, 2001) and im on Redhat linux 7.2. I haven't upgraded my video drivers, just with used the ones on the installation.

Any ideas, suggestions, would counter-strike give me similiar problems? Thanks so much in advance. :D

Update: I tried reinstalling my drivers, and it said:

[root@localhost tmp]# rpm -Uvh NVIDIA_kernel*
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:NVIDIA_kernel ########################################### [100%]
modprobe: Can't locate module NVdriver

NVdriver installed successfully

then:

[root@locate tmp]# rpm -Uvh NVIDIA_GLX*
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
--- WARNING!!
libglx.a
libGLcore.a
libGL.a
libGL.so.1.2.030402
--- The above file(s) possibly belong to a conflicting MESA rpm.
--- They have been renamed to xxx.<originalFile>.RPMSAVE to

--- "(sec-05) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS" for more details.
1:NVIDIA_GLX ########################################### [100%]

Then, I restarted X and nothing seemed to change. I tried winex -winver 98 hl.exe and I also changed the video mode to OpenGL and at 1152x864 and my X is at 1280x1024.

Ok, great! I tried the new game, and I like the settings(looked nice on my desktop) and then when it loaded...it had to load at least each frame every 5 seconds(it reminded me of playing quake 3 with a 256k memory video card and 28.8k)

I also tried to change XVidmode in the config file to 'N', no luck.

Is it my GeForce 2 MX? I mean, is it obsolete on linux already?

Check out the time, finals are tommorow too. Thanks again.

You do not have the drivers for nvidia installed properly.

I have RH 7.2 and a geforce with winex and play halflife, counterstrike, alice, redline.RTCW before the finished the linux port, and lots more. ALL at 1024x768 opengl and its very fast

I also play q1,q2,q3,ut,tribes2 with the native ports at 1024x768

If you get nvidia working so will everything else.

I dont mind writing my steps that differ from yours if you need me to. However there are already alot of how to,s posted around

I've been working on it for awhile now, and I got it ;)

The only problem is when I try to play CS, i can shoot and stuff but my keyboard doesn't do anything, anyone else run into this problem?

Do you have Notepad? If so, can you type into it?

I'm trying to find out if it's a problem with Wine, or with CS. If you can type into Notepad, then it's probably something in CS, and if not, then it's Wine.

I had my friend send me notepad and it worked perfectly(typing) with the same method i run winex. (saves fine too)

$ winex -winver win98 notepad.exe
$ winex -winver win98 hl.exe

Has anyone here played Counter-Strike with the WineX-1.0-3 version?

Alright, I did it! :)

All I had to do was reinstall WineX and it now works like a charm...now all I have to do is work off my rusty skill. :p
